Gophers Go to Work Gives Back to Local Non-Profits
This fall semester’s Gophers Go to Work, formerly known as Carlson Goes to Work, was another success. This signature Net Impact event paired local non-profits facing business challenges with teams of University of Minnesota students with business know-how. Over 35 undergraduate students helped five non-profit clients with challenges ranging from IT application decisions to expansion strategy.
Both students and non-profits gained from the experience and developed positive relationships. Students were able to practice their business skills, while the non-profits left with a go-forward action plan. What’s more, the students and non-profit representatives were able to network with and learn from each other. One student remarked, “It was great getting to work with a non-profit outside of school. I felt like I was really making a difference.”
Net Impact holds this event at least once every year and, due to its popularity, we will be hosting it next week!
Connecting Carlson Starts an Important Conversation
“Talk to me about…” A brand new initiative for our Net Impact chapter, Connecting Carlson, used this provocative phrase to promote honest conversation, understanding, and inclusiveness in the Carlson community. Connecting Carlson consisted of a week-long social media campaign to bring awareness about the diversity in Carlson that is seldom discussed. This campaign included live events in the Carlson building and a Facebook page that posted videos of students and professors each day. The page drew much attention, ultimately acquiring 594 page likes. Take a look at the Facebook page here.
This initiative, in partnership with B-Board, plans to continue into the spring semester. There will be several panel-style discussions on different topics such as gender, religion, and more, that are not typically discussed in Carlson. Please check the Net Impact Events page and website for more information in the coming weeks.
Net Impact Leadership Team Travels to Net Impact Conference
In early November, members of our leadership team traveled to Philadelphia to attend NI16, the annual Net Impact National Conference. At this conference, our chapter was recognized for winning Chapter of the Year 2015-2016, and the leadership team had the opportunity to hear from successful & inspiring Net Impact professionals. The leadership team also networked with other student chapters from across the country, and brought some great ideas back to Minnesota for our chapter. Overall, the conference validated our current efforts and re-ignited our commitment to making a difference at the University of Minnesota and the in the greater Twin Cities community.
We are excited to announce that University of Minnesota Net Impact is officially the 2015-2016 Undergraduate Chapter of the Year! We couldn’t have accomplished this without the hard work and dedication of our members, partners, and leadership team. Thank you to everyone who supported our chapter throughout the process. The 2016-2017 team looks forward to making this coming year even more successful!
Here’s a look at what we accomplished last year.
